Juicy beef patty paired with caramelized onions, sautéed mushrooms, and melted cheese on toasted buns.

# What You'll Need:

→ Burger Patties

01 - 1 lb ground beef (80/20 blend recommended)
02 - 1 tsp kosher salt
03 - ½ tsp freshly ground black pepper
04 - 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce

→ Caramelized Onions

05 - 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
06 - 1 tbsp unsalted butter
07 - 1 tbsp olive oil
08 - ½ tsp sugar
09 - Pinch of salt

→ Sautéed Mushrooms

10 - 8 oz cremini or white mushrooms, sliced
11 - 1 tbsp unsalted butter
12 - 1 clove garlic, minced
13 - Salt and pepper to taste

→ Assembly

14 - 4 burger buns, toasted
15 - 4 slices Swiss or provolone cheese
16 - 2 tbsp mayonnaise (optional)
17 - 4 lettuce leaves (optional)
18 - 4 tomato slices (optional)

# Directions:

01 - Heat butter and olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add sliced onions, sugar, and a pinch of salt. Cook for 20-25 minutes, stirring occasionally, until onions are deep golden brown and very soft. Remove from skillet and set aside.
02 - In the same skillet, melt butter over medium-high heat. Add sliced mushrooms and cook for 5-7 minutes until browned and tender. Add minced garlic and cook for 1 additional minute. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Set aside.
03 - Combine ground beef with kosher salt, black pepper, and Worcestershire sauce in a mixing bowl. Form into 4 equal patties, making them slightly larger than the buns to account for shrinkage during cooking.
04 - Preheat grill or skillet to medium-high heat. Cook patties for 3-4 minutes per side for medium doneness. During the final minute of cooking, place a cheese slice on each patty and cover to melt.
05 - Lightly toast burger buns on the grill or in a toaster until golden brown.
06 - Spread mayonnaise on bottom buns if desired. Layer lettuce and tomato, followed by the cheese-topped beef patty. Top with caramelized onions and sautéed mushrooms. Finish with top buns and serve immediately.

# Expert Advice:

01 -
  • The caramelized onions add a natural sweetness that balances the rich beef perfectly
  • Everything cooks in one skillet, meaning less cleanup and more time enjoying dinner
02 -
  • Rushing the caramelized onions is the biggest mistake because they need time to develop that deep sweetness
  • Letting the patties rest for a couple minutes after cooking helps them stay juicier when you bite into them
03 -
  • Make a small indentation in the center of each raw patty to prevent them from puffing up into balls while cooking
  • Keep the heat at medium when caramelizing onions because high heat will burn them before they sweeten properly
